Oh man, I so love writing about the über cool Catholics out there; I have so many people in mind! You pass them on the streets everyday, ordinary folks who passionately share the faith, their love for Jesus and of course, their willingness to give their all for the sake of the mission.
This time, I am going to share with you my conversation with young video-missionary David Panlilio. I’ve known David for quite some time now. We met at the 1st Catholic Social Media Summit last year (Take note, we’re going to have version 2 this November, but that’s another story). He shared how he came to be with the group called One Billion Stories (OBS). A nurse by training, David decided to walk a a different path, telling people stories about faith, hope, and love through awesome videos.
Sky: You graduated as a nurse, but then chose to be a missionary. What made you take this path?
David: Yes, I am a Registered Nurse and worked for two years in a multinational health company. It seemed to be a very promising career for me because of all the international connections it had. But in the long run I felt that there was still something in me that was yearning to do something [else].
I found it in the passion for the Faith that I had received through the international World Youth Days I had attended — Rio will be my 6th WYD. And with the global Catholic network I had, I always wanted to share the faith we have here in the Philippines with all my friends around the world. My being a nurse is still put to good use, as I get to apply it to the pro-life themed videos we make and I find it very useful in treating my team and friends if they don’t feel well, or during emergency situations whenever we are on mission. So yeah, I’m still very proud to be a Registered Nurse-Video Missionary.
Sky: Why “video” missionary?
David: We are called video missionaries, as the medium of choice for evangelizing is through making videos, and the area where we evangelize is through what Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI calls the “digital continent” also known as the Internet.
Sky: In your stories /videos, what do you look for?
David: We look for stories about Catholics from around the globe, from conversion stories to life-changing experiences and events that have impacted the lives of the individuals we interview, where they can share their testimonies to bring hope, healing, and witness to the Truth that is in the Catholic faith through this new means of evangelization.
Sky: What are your tips for aspiring video missionaries out there?
David: Well, being in the mission field for more than a year now, I’ll be honest that it is not easy, especially if you have given up — in my case — almost everything to dedicate this time in your life to evangelizing in the internet. There will always be struggles with maintaining your resources, but it is in that exercise of trust in the Lord, and asking the intercession of Mama Mary, the angels and the saints, that you will see that He will always provide help in the long run. It is a great exercise of patience, trust, and hope. In the end the reward for one’s faith and trust will be evident. Prayer is always the key in the mission field.
