Senatorial bet hits Duterte for rape joke on slain Australian missionary

Independent senatorial candidate Walden Bello yesterday asked PDP-Laban standard-bearer Rodrigo Duterte to stop from invoking his poor boy background as an excuse for his use of foul language following going viral of his rape joke on Australian lay missionary in YouTube.

In his Facebook page, the former Akbayan party-list representative said Duterte’s rape joke on slain Jacqueline Hamill should be condemned as it was ‘reprehensible, unacceptable, and beyond pale.”

The public should denounce and not allow an act that dishonors the dead and disrespects the female gender, he added.

“Accept and excuse this kind of discourse and you risk regression to a state where women’s rights and security are at risk,” Bello said.

In the Youtube video, Duterte was caught relating the hostage-taking during a campaign rally.

“P***** i**, sayang ito,” he said. “Ang nagpasok sa isip ko ni-rape nila, pinagpilahan nila doon.Nagalit ako kasi ni-rape. Oo, isa rin ‘yun. Pero napakaganda, dapat ang mayor muna ang mauna. Sayang.”

(Son of a b****, what a waste. I thought they raped her and took turns. I was enraged because she was raped. Yes, that’s also one. But she was so beautiful, the mayor should be the first. What a waste.)

Hamill was an Australian lay missionary who was killed together with others during a hostage-taking by prisoners in Davao City led by Felipe Pugoy in 1989. She was 36 at the time. (Rizal Raoul S. Reyes)
