The first time I met Marivie Dalman, she was full of life! Full of Life in the sense that I have never seen her sit and calm down. She was always all over the place, preparing food for a meeting, while working on her computer, while talking and giving advice to her daughter on the phone, while checking up on me (we used to sit beside each other at the office), while arranging the schedule of her husband, while organizing their prayer meeting, while… and the list goes on and on! Man, she multitasks like a pro and she is absolutely awesome in everything she does. A wife, mother, friend, sister and everything else you can think of, she is that! She even organizes her own contemplative retreat (quietly of course)! That is why maybe she has been called the Martha among all the Marys out there. She works and serves with all her heart, making sure when Christ comes, everything is ready.
Sky: Why Martha?
M: I was ‘christened’ Martha by my first household head (in Couples for Christ) and it stuck. I guess it was because I was the one who did everything. I always brought food, always volunteered to clean the venue, played the keyboard, taught the choir to read musical scores, etc. Everyone would approach me for practically all their needs, which could be anywhere from referral to the cheapest caterer to the cheapest funeral parlor. A neighbor once woke me up in the middle of the night to help him patch up with his wife who was so angry she threatened to use a kitchen knife! I was Google and Mapquest even before these things came into being. I was the first one to arrive in all activities and the last to leave.
If that is what Martha is all about then I belong to the category. In reality, I do not like to be called one!
Sky: What’s the first thing you do in the morning?
M: Pray and answer nature’s call or vice versa.
Sky: What motivates you to give your all when you serve and work for God?
M: Because it’s just the way I am, the way my mother brought me up – to always help when someone asks, for as long as I can do it. And she said, “Do everything with nimble fingers that it may be worthy to be offered as a sacrifice to God.”
Sky: What is your “Martha” recipe?
M: Two things. First, Jesus is my best friend. I tell Him everything! I talk to Him from the time I wake up until I go to bed. Second, I go where I am called; serve where I am needed!
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
