So many #CoolCatholics, so little time! This time, I talked to hardcore Catholic and pro-lifer Dominic Barrios. He’s not just one of my good friends and brothers in CFC Singles for Christ, he’s also another creative kindred spirit.
Dominic or Nicky is one cool wedding photographer (I have to say this, so that I can get him for my wedding for free! Now about the groom…). But seriously, his photos have a signature look and style – in short, they are awesome! Not only does he take photos with skill, but he has a passion that seems to capture, not only the wedding event, but the creator of marriage Himself, the only Author of Life.
So where does he get this eye for more than just detail? I think it’s because Nicky is also an advocate of life itself as seen through his passion for John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. More importantly, he’s a Jesus addict! A leader of CFC Singles for Christ, he shares his skills with aspiring photographers, while sharing his love for the Lord and his skills in using photography to glorify Him.
I got to ask him a few questions…. Here goes.
What made you love photography?
When I was young, I was very much into arts and crafts already. I loved sketching using charcoal, making stuff from scratch, painting with oil pastel. But my favorite was sketching people. It was very tiring and draining to sketch a face, so I didn’t pursue that hobby. When I received my first DSLR, I loved that I could instantly capture beautiful things with my camera with just one click. I also loved the idea that I could use this new blessing to document our community and Gawad Kalinga activities.
When I decided that I was going to pursue a career in photography, I was discerning whether to take an apprenticeship in food photography or weddings because they were the very lucrative ones. Who doesn’t love food? They’re yummy and very colorful, plus you get to eat them after shooting them. [I chose] weddings because they are full of emotions and I love shooting people as subjects
What is the most memorable part of a wedding that you want to capture?
My favorite part of the wedding that I love to shoot is the aisle walk of the bride. I always look forward to the groom’s reaction as the church door opens for the bride. They always smile and I love it more when the bride and groom cry because of happiness.
Any words of inspiration to those aspiring photographers out there?
Always have your purpose in mind. Why you’re doing this at all. Is it for yourself or for God. If you’re doing this only for money, then I don’t think you’ll have a long career in photography. But do this out of passion, then you’ll be doing great things as a photographer.
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
– Colossians 3:17
